Flawless Consulting: A Guide to Getting Your Expertise Used
by Peter Block. Pfeiffer, 1981. See
Details [ 1999
2nd Edition Details ]
Block doesn't draw any distinction between
consulting to customers within a single corporate structure, or serving
as an external consultant to multiple organizations. The challenges
and opportunities presented to both internal and external consultants
are highly similar. Block spends considerable time discussing the client-consultant
contracting process. He discusses the need to differentiate essential
wants from desirable wants. He describes how many consultants convince
themselves that an engagement can be successful even if some of the
essential wants go unmet. The result is usually disappointment for all
involved.

The Consultant's Calling: Bringing What You Are to What You
Do
by Geoffrey M. Bellman. Jossey-Bass, 1990. See

For most quality professional, daily practice
includes consulting, whether internal or external. Bellman discusses
the criticality of being ourselves
in our professional practice if we are to have a rewarding career that
properly compliments our life values and priorities: "Our task is to
define the consulting role in such a way that it fits who we really
are." Bellman's perspective is highly reminiscent of Peter Block's thesis
that authenticity in the consulting relationship leads to flawless
consulting. "This is the most powerful thing you can do to have the
leverage you are looking for and to build client commitment."
