Biographical Sketch
Senior consultant with thirty years of experience specializing in quality
assurance, logical and physical data architectures, application architectures,
and strategic planning for the business application of information technology.
With a background ranging from requirements definition to application design
and construction, including data base administration and systems programming,
Rick uses his experience to affect a multi-disciplined approach to the application
of information technology.
Rick's current emphasis is on integrating quality assurance and software
engineering disciplines in a systematic approach to the application of
Six Sigma to information technology. Six Sigma for IT results in high
quality business systems that are capable of internal self-correction
and that can be held accountable for business and technical requirements
through data visibility provided by management dashboards and scorecards.
The rigor of Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) tools provides a platform for
enabling the analysis and design patterns that have been identified and
tested over a career to systematically enhance systems value to the business.
FUNCTIONAL EXPERIENCE
- PROCESS IMPROVEMENT SPECIALIST
- Rick promotes on-going process improvement in client organizations
through the implementation of hybrid process management initiatives
that combine general business quality models (e.g. Six Sigma, Baldrige,
Lean Thinking) with more specialized information technology models (e.g.
SEI CMM, ISO 12207, IEEE Standards). He serves as a Six Sigma Master
Black Belt for corporate clients too new to Six Sigma to have developed
complete comprehensive resources.
- REQUIREMENTS ANALYST
- Rick specializes in conducting business requirements activities within
medium and large information technology initiatives. His emphasis is
on assuring that all stakeholder views are represented, and that the
typical rush to design doesn't overrun the need to clearly differentiate
high level user requirements and more detailed functional requirements.
The result is more complete requirements, and broader and deeper validation
criteria; increasing quality and assuring greater project success.
- DATA & PROCESS MODELER
- As an expert data and process modeler, Rick helps client projects
derive maximum benefit and innovation from new or preexisting data modeling
and process analysis activities. He has authored numerous papers and
courses describing advanced modeling heuristics that can be applied,
with assistance, by client organizations and projects. These heuristics,
when integrated into a Design for Six Sigma framework, result in business
applications that internalize the Voice of the Customer, and maximize
the value of an information technology investment.
- APPLICATION ARCHITECT
- Rick has often played a specialized role on client development projects
to address functional requirements and analysis of features not directly
related to the target business functions. These architectural functions
-- particularly important as clients struggle with their transition
to the e-business arena -- range from audit and security control requirements
to usability and diagnostic features, and to technical development issues
such as integration of wireless capabilities, modularization, tabularization
strategies, messaging, and program application shells. These architectural
capabilities, when integrated into a Design for Six Sigma framework,
result in business applications that maximize reliability, maintainability,
and performance levels.
- QUALITY ASSURANCE ANALYST
- Rick specializes in advising client organization projects on methodology
and process management issues. He works with organizations to deploy
methodologies and standards in a staged process that minimizes impact,
while assuring long-term success and benefit. By supporting projects
with project plan and deliverable review activities, as well as personal
mentoring of individual project team members, Rick works to assure a
maximum of effective delivery by every project.
- EDUCATOR & TRAINER
- Rick holds a masters degree in Educational Change and Technology Innovation
from Walden University. He has
authored, and teaches, numerous courses and workshops in a variety of
information technology disciplines. He has served on the faculties at
the Quality Assurance Institute
in Orlando, and Capella University
in Minneapolis.
- STRATEGIC PLANNING FACILITATOR
- Rick has worked with numerous small and large client organizations
to define organizational charters, and plan supporting processes to
drive the defined mission. Through a workshop entitled Mission-Focused
Planning, he teaches organizations to focus all tactical activities
on the mission and strategic objectives.
